Dear Mackey,
Great to check my messages and find out that you called. Jeri and I are spending some time out here in the mountains in Pennsylvania, sort of getting away from it all. We’ll stay here a few days more, then make our way back to the Big Apple.
Sure was great to see you and the Mrs. down at the Bulldog Reunion. Amazing to think that we were barreling around the halls at NDHS and Dal Hi and Possum Kingdom and Jumbo’s over 50 years ago. Man, didn’t we have some fun.
Little did we realize at that point the directions our lives would take.
I’ve always admired you greatly Max, from the way you used to throw yourself into things as a kid like athletics or work or whatever to the way you threw yourself into your career as a businessman. When God gave out dynamic and enthusiasm, you were sure given extra doses of each.
When I left Dallas back in the in summer of 54 to work at Frontier Ranch, little did I realize that I would never live in Texas again. While working at Frontier, I actually made the decision to pass up my scholarship to Texas in favor of going to little Wheaton College, which gave no scholarships. I was pretty nuts but looking back I have no regrets. The path my life has taken hasn’t always been easy, but it has been an adventure. One thing I never even thought about was that I would ultimately spend the bulk of my adult life in New York and love it. In fact Jeri has loved it too.
Please give my best to your wife. I remember that she has had some physical problems and I hope things are going well for her now. You two seem to have a beautiful loving relationship. I wish we could be with each of you more.
One thing I wasn’t clear on…are you retired? I didn’t get time to ask you some questions like that.
As for me, I think I’ve got about two or three more years in me at the church. It’s been the best job of my life, but I’m starting to think that I’ve given the place about all I’ve got. I have an Associate Pastor who might ultimately take my place. It’s a she, and she is one sharp lady. We ordained her in October.
Anyway Max, that’s about it for now. Jeri and I are sitting here in the mountains listening to some nice CD’s. In a while we’ll have some very good Mexican food which we bought here in the Penn mountains. Who knew?
Love, prayers and best wishes to each of you,
