Sometimes at Rivendell

I went out early to check the weather,

to get firewood from the shed

to check the depth of the snow on TR 37.

I wore a cap but not a coat being outside for only a few minutes.

Sometimes the air would freeze my nostrils,

sugar trees too and make them explode.

Sometimes I turned my face up to the falling snow

closed my eyes and listened to the brook if it wasn’t frozen solid.

Sometimes here in Manhattan I go out to check the weather,

the ice and snow around 3rd Avenue and East 29th.

wearing a cap but not a coat.

It’s never cold enough to freeze my nostrils

but I do turn my face up to the snow or rain,

look up to the sky and the Empire Mother,

close my eyes and listen to the traffic never frozen.
