Doc Weaver was my great grandfather. He was a country doctor in DeLeon, Texas in a day when house calls were the rule not the exception. Of course that was a time when he made his calls not in a sedan but in a carriage pulled by Old Dan his faithful horse. The story goes that many times after a long day of visits and after dark Doc Weaver would get in his carriage and head back toward DeLeon and fall sound asleep. It didn’t matter to Dan. He knew exactly how to get home. He would make his way back into town and pull up to the Weaver house, the doc out cold. Oft times the the Doc’s wife Mollie would hear the carriage pull in and go wake up the good doctor. Other times Doc Weaver would sleep for a while until awakened by Dan’s winneying, pick up his medical bag, and wander inside, wash up, and sit down for Mollie’s good cooking.
